Individuals of this breed were kept by representatives of the aristocratic class of Akita Prefecture (Japan), located in a mountainous area. The breed arose through the efforts of some disgraced grandee, who, being excommunicated from the imperial court, concentrated all his efforts on working with dogs. Over time, Akita Inu became an indispensable attribute of the aristocratic lifestyle, and by the luxury of the leash it was possible to judge the significance of the social status of the owner.
