At that time, Akita Inu were attracted to bear hunting and as guards. The breed arose through the efforts of some disgraced grandee, who, being excommunicated from the imperial court, concentrated all his efforts on working with dogs. Over time, Akita Inu became an indispensable attribute of the aristocratic lifestyle, and by the luxury of the leash it was possible to judge the significance of the social status of the owner. Each dog was assigned a special caretaker, dressed in special attire, indicating his belonging to a particular aristocratic home and occupation.
